One two-month voyage around the Land Down Under has been cancelled following the death of an older woman who was abandoned by the cruise liner on a remote island.

The passenger had been walking on the remote island with shipmates from the Coral Adventurer, but parted ways from the party for a break. The liner departed without her and went back later that day after the personnel discovered the woman was not present.

An extensive rescue mission located her person the following day.

Authorities are investigating the incident, alongside law enforcement and the official investigator.

The CEO of the cruise operator announced that guests and staff on the vessel were notified that the rest of the voyage had been terminated due to the "tragic passing and previous engine troubles".

In a statement, he mentioned that travelers would be provided a full refund, and said the organization was working "to arrange the return journeys of the passengers via specially arranged planes".

Authorities also published an latest statement, and said they had "issued a directive to the Master" banning any new passengers from boarding the ship.

The official said that they would attend the liner in Cairns upon its arrival.
