Seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was responsible for targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger from the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
