This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional body horror, but within Together exists a profound contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
